Region has third most burglaries in country, research shows

Solihull Editorial 21st Oct, 2023   0

THE WEST Midlands was victim to the third most burglaries in the country, according to a home security company.

ADT said it looked at burglary rates across England and Wales to reveal the areas most at risk in the year ending March 2023.

The West Midlands came in third with 13.8 burglaries per 1,000 people – an increase of 4.5 per cent on the year before.

Cleveland in North Yorkshire came top with 16.6 burglaries per 1,000 people.

ADT said: “Those living in the West Midlands were at a higher risk of experiencing a home invasion than residents of other areas across England and Wales.

“Those living in Birmingham, Coventry, and surrounding areas experienced 13.8 burglaries per 1,000 homes in the last 12 months.

“Since last year, burglaries in the West Midlands have increased by 4.5 per cent.”

West Midlands Police has advised residents to be aware of shorter days and longer nights as winter approaches, as these circumstances can provide cover for potential burglars.

Residents have been encouraged to know about letterbox fishing and to keep all keys secure and out of reach.

Meanwhile, West Midlands Police has offered advice for homeowners to keep their properties safe:

  • Front doors should have a viewer and door chain where possible, and letter boxes should be positioned so people cannot reach through and release the lock.
  • UPVC doors or doors with Euro Cylinders should have DHF TS007 3 Star or Sold Secure Diamond Standard Anti-Bump replacement cylinders fitted.
  • Patio doors should have an ‘anti-lift’ device which will prevent the sliding door being levered off its runners.
  • All ground floor windows and those which open onto accessible areas such as balconies or roofs should be fitted with window locks, unless designated as a means of escape.
  • All tools and equipment should be put away and people should ensure sheds are locked when not in use with solid and secure locks.
