THERE may be more than 5,000 miles between them, but that hasn’t stopped pupils from a Solihull school from reaching out across the globe.

Ruckleigh School is forging a link with Luwi School in Malawi, in a bid to help children and support education in the East African country.

Pupils from the Lode Lane school have been filling suitcases with donations, which will be flown out to Malawi during October half-term and hand-delivered by the school’s bursar, Charlotte Laurens, who will spend time in the African classroom.

Included in the donations are general school supplies, books and learning literature and a variety of clothing and sportswear, including football shirts.

Mrs Laurens said: “Our pupils and their families have been incredibly generous with their donations and we can’t wait to take them out to Malawi, where we know they will be so gratefully received and appreciated.

“The youngsters at Luwi School have so little, but they value their education so highly and these donations will make a world of difference to them.”

She added that Ruckleigh was looking forward to forging a close link with the school to enable the children, both here in Solihull and in Malawi, to talk to each other, learn from each other and maybe even visit and meet in person in the future.
