AN OLDER people’s charity is calling on Silhillians to wear purple in support of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD).
Age UK Solihull, is asking local residents, businesses and community groups to come together on June 15 to raise funds, and awareness, of the abuse, neglect and exploitation experienced suffered by older people in the borough.
The charity is calling on supporters to get involved by hosting a purple-themed fundraiser or doing one kind thing for an older person to raise awareness of WEAAD.
Last year, over 65s made up 65 per cent of safeguarding enquiries made about adults in Solihull who may be at risk of abuse, according to the charity.
Elder abuse can take many forms, including neglect, physical, financial, emotional and psychological abuse, as well as discrimination.
Anne Hastings, chief executive at Age UK Solihull, said: “World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is an important reminder that every older person deserves to feel safe, respected and valued.
“Abuse of older people is often underreported, and many people may not realise the different forms it can take.
“By raising awareness and encouraging simple acts of kindness and support through donations and fundraising, we can help older people feel less isolated and ensure they know they are not alone.”
