Nominations open for Young Active Citizens Awards

Sarah Mason 4th Nov, 2025   0

RESIDENTS are being asked to nominate young people for the 2026 Young Active Citizens Awards.

The awards have been launched by the West Midlands Lieutenancy and are open to young people who are doing amazing things to build and strengthen their local communities.

Reflecting the spirit of the Commonwealth by embracing the values of humanity, equality and diversity, the awards celebrate the extraordinary impact that young people are having on the communities in which they live as well as the wider region – from fundraising to mentoring, volunteering to championing special causes.

The four age categories are: up to 11 years, 12 to 14 years, 15 to 18 years and 19 to 25 years.

The Lord Lieutenant for the West Midlands, Derrick Anderson, said; “We know that every day young people are doing fantastic things to help others and our awards celebrate this. It is inspiring to hear their stories and the lengths they go to make a positive contribution to helping others – they are an example to us all.

“If you know a young person who is making a difference in their communities, please nominate them.”

The closing date for nominations is February 7.

Winners will receive special medals from the Lord Lieutenant.

Last year’s Young Active Citizen Award winners included eight-year-old Darci-Bleu Stewart, from Yardley Wood Community Primary School, who despite undergoing treatment for cancer twice, has not let her challenges define her. After chemotherapy, she grew her hair to donate it for wigs for children with hair loss.

And Syed Adi Ahmed from Deaf World, who set up the first deaf cricket team in the region and has created British Sign Language resources to help hard of hearing people learn to drive, given there are no deaf driving instructors.
