BAKERS are being invited to put their skills to the test during Fairtrade fortnight to see who will come out on top in a cake competition.

To mark the annual event bakers are challenged to bake and decorate a cake using at least two ingredients that are marked as Fairtrade ready to showcase at a competition on Saturday, March 4. The competition, being held at The Core will put adults’ and children’s baking and decorating skills to the test.

There are a number of categories to enter, from cup-cakes and family favourites to show stoppers.

The judging panel will include Steven Hearn, Head Chef at Hampton Manor, as well as Amari Koryang, winner of CBBC Bake Off 2015.

Coun Tony Dicicco, Cabinet Member for Stronger Communities and Partnerships, said: “This is another great Fairtrade event, getting the message about sustainable food, local shopping and food production out to the community.

“We hope that everyone who takes part enjoys it as much as I’m sure the judges will.”

A number of special prizes will be up for grabs for the best bakers who use Fairtrade ingredients with imagination, including afternoon tea at Hampton Manor.

The drop-off time for competing cakes is between 11am and noon, with judging taking place between noon and 1pm.
