PUPILS and staff ditched their shoes for the day and wore slippers to school in a bid raise much-needed funds for Age UK Solihull.

Damson Wood Nursery and Infant School raised a whopping £160 when it took part in Slip into Slippers.

Emily Hughes, Head of School said: “Children across the school really enjoyed wearing their slippers to raise money, they asked if they could wear them every day because they were so comfortable.

“They enjoyed learning about the work of Age UK Solihull and are happy to be helping older people in our community.

“I am very proud to be supporting a charity that does so much for older people in Solihull who may be lonely or need help with day-to-day tasks.

“This is the first year Damson Wood has taken part in Slip into Slippers; it is a fun way to raise awareness for a local charity which is very close to my heart.”

The pupils have been hearing about the work Age UK does when Miss Hughes tells them about her weekly visits to Stan aged 94, as she volunteers as a befriender for the charity.

Miss Hughes has also taken part in the Great Birmingham Run in support of the charity.

Lorraine Hart, Fundraising Manager at Age UK Solihull, said: “It was great to see so many schools, staff and local business people take part this year.

“It’s an easy and fun way to raise money for the charity, but at the same time there’s a serious message about the value of older people in society, both at work and in the home, and a way to recognise all that our parents and grandparents do for us.”
