Unbeaten Javid fires Berkswell to Birmingham & District T20 Challenge Cup glory

BERKSWELL lifted the Birmingham & District Twenty20 Challenge Cup after a nine-wicket win against visitors Shrewsbury on Sunday.

Ateeq Javid hit an unbeaten 79 to guide his side to victory in the 14th over after Shrewsbury had finished their innings on 126-5.

Shrewsbury elected to bat first after winning the toss, and backed up the decision with an opening stand of 70 between Tyler Ibbotson (69) and Rob Foster (29), before the latter was caught by Daniel Clark off Daniel Mousley.

Mousley claimed another wicket when having Llyr Thomas (9), caught by Dominic Ostler for 89-2.

Asharn Hodge (12) was next to go when Mohammed Ahmed took a catch off Richard Jones, while Matthew Swift (2) followed shortly after, caught by Mousley from another Jones delivery.

Ibbotson’s stint at the crease ended when he was run out by Nicholas Bland, leaving a total that was within range for Berkswell’s batsmen.

The hosts started brightly with a stand of 64 between openers Javid and Bland (19), who was stumped by Swift.

Number three Mousley (30) stepped up to the plate following Bland’s dismissal, and formed a partnership of 68 with Javid to take their side to silverware.

Berkswell hope to take the momentum of their cup final victory into Saturday’s Birmingham & District Premier Division One clash (12.00), with Shrewsbury proving the opponents for the second time in a week at The Lant.
