Two points in as many days for free scoring Barons

ICE HOCKEY: BARONS picked up two points from as many games this weekend, the highlight being a crushing 16-0 win against Deeside Dragons.

Saturday saw Barons make the long trip to Solway to take on Solway Sharks.

Despite goals for Tom Soar and Adam Brittle, Solway – one of the league’s strong sides – proved much stronger and put five past the Barons to earn a three-goal win.

Fortunes were quicky reversed on Sunday though as struggling Dragons failed to make an impression.

Dragons showed enough fight in the opening minutes to ensure the home side couldn’t take things for granted.

Daniel Harrison and Marcus Maynard combined to put Barons ahead on eight minutes before the lead was doubled three minutes later when a shot from Harrison bounced off the boards and rebounded into the net after deflecting off Dragons’ netminders back.

The scoreline had eased out further by the end of the period as powerplay goals from Tom Soar and Andy Whitehouse doubled Barons’ lead to four.

The second period saw some handbags early on, initially involving Rich Crowe and drawing in Dave Rogers and Josh Bruce.

Goals would be scored in the second period by Luke Brittle, Matt Maurice (2), Marcus Maynard, Tom Soar, Josh Bruce and Phil Mulcahy to give Solihull an 11-0 advantage as the forwards went on the rampage heading into the final 20.

By the third period, Barons were scoring with ease with very little coming back as the short benched Deeside team tired.

Marcus Maynard, Luke Brittle, Andy Whitehouse and Matt Maurice all added to the goal fest.

This weekend sees Barons play at home twice.

They welcome Whitley Warriors on Saturday (5pm) before hosting Sheffield Steeldogs on Sunday at 6pm.
