TRANSFERS - Moors sign Davis and Roberts on loan

Solihull Editorial 31st Jan, 2023   0

SOLIHULL Moors have bolstered their squad with the loan signings of David Davis and Mitchell Roberts until the end of the season.

Experienced midfielder Davis joins from League One club Forest Green Rovers and has previously played for Birmingham and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Roberts joins on loan from Championship side Birmingham City and is comfortable operating at either left back or centre back.

Davis said: “Can’t wait to get going, obviously I met the gaffer last week and it was pretty simple for me; as soon as I saw the facilities and the gaffer, I knew I wanted to come.

“As soon as I came here I was impressed by everything, it’s really, really high end. I think the club deserves to be a lot higher and if we can make a play-off push, then great!

“I spoke with Harry Boyes who was with me at Forest Green and he couldn’t speak highly enough of the club, then coming and actually seeing it for myself it was a no brainer for me.”

Roberts said: “I’m really excited to get going, the standard’s been really good in training and I’m feeling ready.

“As soon as I knew about the interest from Solihull Moors, I just wanted to come to be honest, it’s a great chance for me to play a lot of matches and help the team.

“I’ve been to the ground a few times, especially when I was younger. I’ve come to a few Moors games in the past, so I pay interest to how the club is doing, and I’ve been following the league even before I came here.”

Moors boss Neal Ardley added: “David’s a winner and everything I’ve felt that we’ve needed for a while.

“We’ve got a lot of box-to-box midfielders and with Davis he wants to do the ugly side of the game, I think he’ll compliment all of those players very well.

“With the games we’ve got coming up and him in the engine room, we feel like we’ve got a lot more options now and he’s a great character to have around the place as well.

“One position we really needed a bit of cover in was probably the full-back area – it’s hard for both [James] Clarkey and Ben Coker to play every game.

“Mitch [Roberts] can play left-back, wing-back, even left centre-half if you need him to. He’s had a little bit of time out, so he’s probably not quite where he needs to be just yet in terms of match fitness but that’s only going to come with games.

“I think Mitch is certainly going to be a good addition for us.”

Davis started his career with Wolves and made seven appearances in the Premier League before later helping the club win the League One title.

The 31-year-old eventually moved to Midlands rivals Birmingham where he made just shy of 200 appearances across six seasons in the Championship.

He then spent two seasons with Shrewsbury Town before joining newly-promoted Forest Green in the summer where he made 17 appearances in all competitions.

Roberts spent the first half of the campaign on loan at National League rivals Oldham Athletic where he made nine appearances.

The 22-year-old has also previously enjoyed temporary spells in League Two with Harrogate Town and Carlisle United.
