TRANSFER - Moors sign midfielder Whelan on loan

Solihull Editorial 13th Jan, 2023   0

SOLIHULL Moors have announced the loan signing of midfielder Tom Whelan from Chesterfield until the end of the season subject to league approval.

The 26-year-old has featured eight times for the Spireites this season and a further four times for Aldershot Town during a one-month loan spell earlier in the campaign.

Whelan helped Weymouth earn promotion to the National League in 2019/20 and his impressive performances saw him make the move to Chesterfield in October 2020.

Whelan said: “I’m really happy to get it done, I just want to get started and playing games now.

“It’s a very strong squad here and we’ve got a good chance of getting into the play-off places.

“It didn’t need much convincing for me to join, I’ve played against the club multiple times including the play-offs last year, it was a great atmosphere on that day and I’m looking forward to it.”

Moors manager Neal Ardley added: “Tom is an experienced lad and we’re really pleased to have convinced him to come and join us.

“He can play in various midfield roles, he’s highly energetic, and gives us something different to what we already have.”

Whelan scored five goals in 27 appearances in his first season at the Technique Stadium before he joined fellow National League side Eastleigh ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.

He impressed again with Eastleigh, scoring four goals in 26 league outings, before returning to Chesterfield for a second spell as he became the first signing of Paul Cook’s tenure.

The midfielder played in Chesterfield’s defeat to Moors in the play-off semi-final last season and started in the Spireites 2-0 win against Solihull earlier this campaign.
