Solihull's Spalding one step away from Open

Solihull Editorial 28th Jun, 2018   0

SOLIHULL professional golfer Daanyal Spalding is one step away from clinching a place in this year’s Open Championship which takes place at Carnoustie next month.

Spalding, 23, did more than qualify for the second qualifying round as he topped the leaderboard after carding a 3-under par 67 at Kedleston Park in Derbyshire.

There will be four second round qualifying tournaments next week and Spalding is now waiting to find out which one he will be playing at.

Kedlestone Park was hosting a regional qualifying event for the first time, and at over 7000 yards, was selected to provide a tough challenge to those chasing a place in the line-up for the 147th Open, which returns to Carnoustie for the first time since 2007.

“It was a tough day but I’m very excited to be through to the second and final qualifying round, and to go through in first place is fantastic,” said Spalding, who is sponsored by Four Ashes Golf Centre where he first picked up a golf club.

“I’ve been working extremely hard at Four Ashes, and it all came right for me but there’s no time to rest on my laurels.

“I’ve got a massive opportunity next week and I’m going to be putting in the hours now to make sure I’m at the top of my game.

“Qualifying for The Open would be awesome.”
