Snow cuts short Bears' league campaign in Sheffield

WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL: WARWICKSHIRE Bears’ women’s team made a losing start to their Women’s League campaign, falling short against Worcester Wolves.

It got worse for the Bears when poor weather forced the Bears to forfeit their remaining games to enable the side to travel home from the league’s base in Sheffield.

Bears faced Worcester at midday on Saturday, a game likely to be a tough challenge as the opposition tracked former GB player Jordanna Bartlett – who made her return to basketball after welcoming a baby boy.

Despite the drive of the Bears side, the women were unable to hold off the Wolves.

Worcester had little problem finding Bears’ basket while a tight defence ensured Warwickshrie were restricted up front.

The game ended 18-42 in favour of the Wolves.

Bears did manage to squeeze in a second fixture, another tough clash against Angels of the North.

The game proved to be a repeat of the opening contest, with Bears finding it hard to bring together their varying levels of game experience to force any pressure on the Angels basket.

At the other end, Angels took full advantag of their high levels of experience to pull clear and maintain a healthy gap between the teams.

Despite a marked and continued improvement by Bears, it was not enough to stop the Angels claiming a convincing win – 19-34.

With the forecast of worsening weather looming, a decision was made by the Bears to forfeit the games of the following day to enable their players to get home safely.

Coach Robinson said: “The girls did really well and should be proud of their efforts.

“Hopefully they will learn from the experience.

“Going forward, we know that we need to work harder at training and support one another’s development so we can continue to compete against such well drilled teams.

“They all have the ability but we need more experience playing together as a team.”

Bears are next in action when Bears’ 1 and 3 teams travel to Leicester to take on the Cobras on Sunday, January 7.
