BIRMINGHAM and Solihull Hornets pushed a strong Droitwich team all the way in a cruel 41-36 defeat as the home side conceded a try at the death.
Solihull recovered from a 13-point deficit in the first half to close the gap to a single point at the interval at Portway.
And the Hornets took the lead with minutes left to play only for Droitwich to score a converted try with the last play of the game.
Droitwich’s team contained 11 players who featured for the first team in their last league fixture.
And the visitors took the lead after just two minutes as Droitwich crossed for the game’s first try.
A similar move brought about Droitwich’s second try only for the Hornets to respond with a converted try.
However, the visitors crossed twice more in the first half to take a commanding 13-point lead.
The Hornets responded well with a try under the posts before Solihull pounced on a mistake by the Droitwich full-back to strike again before the break.
A breakaway try early in the second half extended Droitwich’s lead only for the Hornets to fire straight back with another converted try.
The Hornets took the lead against the run of play through a penalty as Droitwich scored a try go back in front.
With only minutes left on the clock, the Hornets crossed for their final try as the conversion edged the Hornets into a two-point lead.
However, the Hornets lost the ball at a ruck following the restart as Droitwich ran under the posts to snatch the win at the death.
Birmingham and Solihull Bees return to action against Harbury on Saturday, November 8 with kick-off at 2.15pm at Portway.
