BIRMINGHAM and Solihull Bees made the perfect start to the new season with a resounding 63-5 win against Coventry Welsh.

The Bees ran in nine tries at Portway to claim their first opening day win for four years.

And the result means Solihull sit top of the Counties 2 Midlands West (East) table on points difference.

Despite the final scorelines, the Bees fell behind early on when Coventry broke 30-metres from a scrum to score the game’s opening try.

And the bees then lost the influential Lewis Edwards to a dislocated shoulder as Kody Turner returned to the pitch for the Bees for the first time in almost two years.

Solihull turned the game around soon after when Turner collected James Widdop’s kick ahead and the former beat three Coventry defenders to score in the corner.

And the home side struck again when George Widdop burst through a gap to score which J Widdop converted.

The Bees extended their lead as Ryan Sleaford ran clear of two Welsh defenders to score and J Widdop converted.

And Jack Allen marked his 50th appearance for the club with Solihull’s bonus point try as J Widdop again kicked the extras.

The Bees crossed again before the break as Sleaford scored his second try and J Widdop converted to stretch the lead to 30 points at the interval.

Solihull scored straight from the kick-off at the start of the second period as Harry Garratt dotted down while J Widdop kicked the conversion.

Bees skipper Adam Trombley then touched down under the posts allowing an easy conversion for J Widdop.

The hosts passed a half-century of points when Joe Rogers dotted down and J Widdop converted with Welsh playing with 14-men due to an injury.

Further injuries for both teams saw the match end in a 13-a-side contest as Rogers scored the game’s final try and J Widdop stayed perfect from the kicking tee.

Birmingham and Solihull Bees are next in action against Barkers Butts on Saturday, September 13 with kick-off at 3pm at Pickford Grange Lane.
