BIRMINGHAM and Solihull Bees returned to winning ways in the league with a bonus point 34-24 victory against Southam.

Both Storm Atkins and Will Heath crossed twice while Joe Rogers also touched down for the Bees at Portway.

The result means Solihull sit fifth in the Counties 2 Midlands West (East) table.

Despite missing a simple penalty from in front of the posts, the home side crossed for the game’s first try on eight minutes as Atkins finished under the posts.

And Solihull extended their lead moments later when Heath crashed over the line on his return to action following a turnover.

Southam responded with a converted try later in the first half as the visitors tried to utilise the windy conditions.

However, the Bees restored their 12-point lead just past the half-hour mark as Rogers went over for the home side’s third try and Atkins added the extras.

Southam hit back again shortly before half time as the visitors pounced on a dropped ball to score and converted well from the touchline.

The Bees crossed for their bonus point try just before the break as Atkins jinked his way to the line to score his second of the game.

Atkins converted his own try to send the Bees into the break with a 12-point lead.

Solihull stretched their lead after the break as Heath won the race to his own kick ahead in a three-man chase over 30-yards after good work from Aron Bowler-Sayce.

Southam eventually reduced the deficit on the hour mark before the Bees lost Ali Cook to a yellow card in the final five minutes.

And the visitors scored from the resulting point to secure a try bonus point and close the gap between the teams to seven points.

However, the Bees held off Southam’s late fightback as Atkins kicked a penalty at the death from 40-yards out to deny the visitors a losing bonus point.

Birmingham and Solihull Bees are next in action against Lutterworth 2nds on Saturday, October 11 with kick-off at 3pm at Portway.
