BIRMINGHAM and Solihull Bees claimed a 30-27 victory against Southam in their final home game of the season.

Lewis Edwards starred for Bees with a 15-point individual haul while Brad Sinclair, Stephen Johnson and PJ Hatch all crossed for tries in a bonus point win in front of the largest crowd of the season at Portway.

The result means Solihull sit fifth in the Counties 2 Midlands West (East) table.

Southam stunned the home crowd with the game’s first try on eight minutes following a well-worked team move.

However, Bees responded with a try of their own from the restart as Sinclair dotted down after good work from Johnson, Liam Dunne and the returning Ali Cook.

The visitors reclaimed the lead soon after with a converted try as Edwards reduced the gap to a single point with two quickfire penalties.

Southam scored their try just before the half-hour mark only for Johnson to dot down in the final few minutes of the first half and reduce the deficit to one point at the break.

And Solihull finally took the lead at the start of the second half as PJ Hatch finished off a flowing move and Edwards converted.

The home side stretched their lead when Edwards collected his own chip and chase before touching down and converting his own try.

Southam crossed for two further tries but crucially failed to add the conversion on both occasions as Edwards’ 10 points from the kicking tee proved decisive.

Birmingham and Solihull Bees finish the season away at Veseyans on Saturday, April 6 with kick-off at 3pm at Little Hardwick Road.
