RUGBY UNION - Bees handed second straight home walkover

BIRMINGHAM and Solihull Bees were handed a second straight home walkover after rivals Birmingham Exiles were unable to field a side.

The five-point win means Bees lead second-placed Coventrians by 23 points at the top of the Counties 3 Midlands West (South) having already secured the title.

With the league fixture awarded as a walkover, Exiles sent over their available players to Portway as two mixed teams played a friendly game.

Bees opted to rest a few players, given the nature of the game, as coach James Panter started at 10 and Will Steele played in the second row.

And Panter kicked three conversions after Cole Elleman, PJ Hatch, Jakey Lowe, Deaglan O’Brien and Jack Allen all crossed for first-half tries.

The teams were shuffled at the break which led to a more competitive second half as some fast flowing rugby kept the large crowd entertained as O’Brien grabbed a second try, followed by Ryan Sleaford, and Panter slotted one further conversion to finish with four from seven attempt for the day.

Bees are next in action away at Rugby Welsh on Saturday, March 4 with kick-off at 2.15pm at Alwyn Road.
