RUGBY SEVENS - Portway Pirates win first trophy at Redditch X7's tournament

PORTWAY Pirates Sevens rugby team won their first trophy at the inaugural Redditch RFC X7’s tournament last weekend.

The Pirates are predominantly made up of players from Birmingham and Solihull RFC and secured the trophy on just their second outing of the season.

And the Pirates were placed in a group with hosts Redditch, Stourbridge Grasshoppers and local rivals Old Yardlians RFC.

A youthful Pirates team took to the pitch in the opening game against Redditch and their fitness began to show as they eased to a comfortable win.

That was followed by another impressive win against Old Yardlians, scoring some fantastic tries along the way.

Stourbridge were forced to concede their match against the Pirates which meant the Portway side topped their group to set up a semi-final clash with Malvern RFC.

A tough encounter ensued with both teams deploying young teams as the Pirates eventually claimed a 21-5 victory to advance to the final.

And the Pirates would meet group opponents Redditch in the showpiece match as they won 36-5 in front of a partisan home crowd.

This marked the first trophy won by the club’s sevens team after Birmingham and Solihull secured a league and cup double last term.

The format of X7’s differentiates to regular 7’s rugby with matches played on half a pitch and the scoring zone placed on the try line for increased points.

Portway Pirates would like to congratulate Redditch RFC and its volunteers for hosting a brilliant first tournament and look forward to returning next season.
