Relentless Highgate United close in on top two

HIGHGATE United stepped up their charge towards promotion from the Midland League Premier Division with a 4-1 home victory over relegation-threatened Haughmond on Tuesday night.

Having taken a 19th-minute lead through Arron Brown’s penalty, the Gate found themselves level at the break when Kevin Renshaw equalised for the second-from-bottom visitors against the run of play.

Reece Hewitt restored United’s lead with an unstoppable drive after the break before Marco Adaggio made it 3-1 with 18 minutes remaining.

The rout was complete ten minutes later when Brown netted his second of the game to move United to within two points of second placed Coleshill Town with two games in hand.

Victory came off the back of Saturday’s narrow 1-0 victory over a resilient Boldmere St Michaels.

Brown bagged the only goal of the game in the 68th minute to secure the three points for the hosts.

Up next for Highgate is a trip to Long Eaton United tomorrow (Saturday) followed by a journey to bottom-of-the-table Rocester on Tuesday night.
