Olton & WW Ladies Hockey Club a win away from promotion

Solihull Editorial 9th Apr, 2019   0

OLTON & West Warwick Hockey Club’s ladies stand a win away from Division 1 status next season, after thumping Leeds 4-0 in the first of their play-off matches.

Two sides from the three team round-robin of Olton, Leeds and Horsham will be promoted to the brand new Division 1, with the Solihull-based club putting themselves in a prime position to do just that.

Their inability to score in the final game of the regular season put them in the position of having to do it the hard way through the play-offs, but they made no such mistake at the weekend.

Taking the lead five minutes in through Sally Walton was the perfect start for the visitors, an advantage which was doubled by Alice Conquest on 13 minutes.

Walton added a second after half-time from a penalty strike, before Conquest also netted a brace in the dying minutes, when she swept home after a wonderful flowing move.

The club return to Grange Road on Sunday to face Horsham (12pm), knowing a win will seal their promotion.

Olton Ladies third XI thumped Atherstone’s first XI 8-1, whilst the fifth XI beat Sutton Coldfield 7s 5-3 in an enthralling game, making it a successful week all-round for the ladies sides.

Meanwhile, the under-18s reached a cup final after Reading were unable to raise a side to play, where they will meet Northampton Saints, played at Reading Hockey Club on May 12.
