Olton & West Warwick ladies continue strong run of form; men's side lose out to the Buccaneers

OLTON & West Warwick Hockey Club’s ladies side had a memorable weekend, after they got revenge on ISCA Hockey Club with a 2-1 victory in the Investec Ladies Conference West.

The scoreline was a reverse of the defeat they suffered before the Christmas break, following up from their heroic draw with the league leaders in the previous week.

Featuring pace and stamina in abundance, the University side used that combination to take a 22nd minute lead, when penetrating the right wing, delivering a pass into the middle that was deflected in.

Olton equalised through Sade Gerald at a penalty corner shortly after the interval, before Sally Walton made it 2-1 to the hosts – again from a corner.

The go-ahead goal sparked a frantic final twenty with a number of suspensions ensuing, but no further goals followed as Olton & WW ran out winners.

Oxford Hawks are next to visit this weekend – the two clubs drawing the reverse tie 2-2 in October.

The men’s side meanwhile were on the wrong end of a 3-2 scoreline to West Bath Buccaneers.

Conceding twice in a couple of minutes in the first-half wasn’t on the agenda for Olton, but it left the visitors with a mountain to climb.

They eventually settled into the game and began to up their performance level, until another set-back followed in the 30th minute with Bath scoring a third.

Olton came out fighting after a half-time team talk and dominated the second-half, pulling a goal back through Edwin Waters in the 65th minute, followed by Steve Batten three minutes later.

Frenetically chasing the equaliser, the visitors were unable to level the game and had to rue their slow start.

The men’s first XI are back on the road this weekend, playing ISCA in Exeter – a team they beat 5-1 in the home fixture.
