HARRISON Morrow showed his potential with an impressive drive in the prestigious Walter Hayes Trophy at Silverstone.

The Solihull teenager impressed on the track for Shaws Motorsport in a field of more than 100 Formula Ford drivers.

Morrow took to the track in his 50-year-old Royale race car and qualified 14th in his group competing against much newer cars.

He also qualified second in his class on a very wet track.

Morrow raced well in his heat only to suffer a five-second penalty for exceeding track limits to drop down to 17th.

The main Walter Hayes Trophy is open for all cars to win.

However, older cars, including Morrow’s Royale, compete for a separate trophy as well.

Morrow raced in the pre-final for older cars – the Carl Hamer Trophy – with only pre-1982 cars involved.

A wet qualifying session made life difficult for Morrow who could only manage 17th on the grid.

However, Morrow made a flying start as he overtook four cars on the opening lap and moved up to eighth by lap five.

He began to close on the cars in front of him but ran out time to complete any more overtakes.

In the main race, Morrow started 13th and finished eighth, finishing ahead of several newer cars.

This meant he started the semi-final in 30th place as he fought his way to 24th place overall.

Morrow saved his best drive until last in the final of the Carl Hamer Trophy.

He tailed the leading pack from eighth on the grid but lost time later in the race as he avoided a spinning car ahead of him.

In a straight race to the line, Morrow finished in fifth place as the 16-year-old delivered an impressive drive in just his fourth race in cars.

Shaws Motorsport team boss, Mark Bates said: “If only for the wet weather, Harrison could have been in the top three or four straightaway.”
