ICE HOCKEY - Vixens victorious on return to league action

AFTER a long wait for their second fixture, Solihull Vixens dusted off the cobwebs to thrash Kingston Diamonds 5-1 in a dominant performance in the Women’s National Ice Hockey Elite League.

Saffron Allen scored twice for the Vixens with Katie Henry, Grace Garbett and Anna Badaoui all on target – the latter netting on her league debut for the club – at Planet Ice Solihull.

Vixens opened their season in September with a win against Guildford before their home match with Streatham last month was cancelled due to rail strikes.

Match sharpness was a concern for Vixens, with every other team in the league having played several matches.

However, Vixens dominated throughout and made a strong start but were unable to convert a flurry of chances.

And Kingston struck against the run of play when Vixens were penalised and conceded on the powerplay at the end of the first period to send Solihull into the break with a one-goal deficit.

Vixens eventually drew level when Henry produced a clinical finish in the second period as Solihull’s dominance in possession was finally rewarded.

Solihull began to take control of the game in the third period and took the lead just three minutes in when Allen grabbed the go-ahead goal.

Further goals from Garbett, Allen and Badaoui secured a comfortable win for Vixens who have now both of their opening two matches in the league season to sit third in the table.

Vixens are next in action away at Queen Bees on Saturday, November 19 with the face-off at 6.40pm.
