THE opening day of the 44th Peter McEvoy Trophy concluded with England’s Samuel Marshall and Toby Peters tied at the top of the leaderboard.

Both players carded impressive scores of 135 (-7) over the Copt Heath course.

Marshall, representing St Neots Golf Club, and Peters, from Thorpe Hall, showcased exceptional skill and composure, navigating the challenging layout.

Their performances set a high standard for the field in this prestigious under-18 stroke play championship.

Close on their heels is Thomas Hartshorne, who posted a score of 138 (-4), securing third place.

A duo of players, Ben Sessions and Joe Austin, are tied for fourth at 141 (-1).

The tournament helped launch the careers of golfing greats like Justin Rose and Lee Westwood.

This year’s edition is the first to take place since the recent passing of Peter McEvoy OBE, the tournament’s namesake and a stalwart of amateur golf.

Tournament director, Ian Davidson said: “During day one at Copt Heath we’ve been blessed with both wonderful weather, and the best of British junior golf.

“With both boys and girls playing in a fabulous tournament, we’ve currently got a duo of boys leading at six under par. The tournament record is 12 under, meaning day two with rounds three and four is going to build to a fantastic climax.”

The top 40 players and ties will advance to the final 36 holes on day two.
