JACK Stevens scored his first goal of the season as Solihull Moors secured a comfortable 2-0 win against Rochdale to extend the club’s unbeaten start to the campaign.

Stevens opened the scoring early in the second half before Josh Kelly sealed the points at the ARMCO Arena with Moors now unbeaten in their opening 14 league matches.

The result means Solihull sit third in the National League table with Moors head coach Andy Whing delighted to secure an eighth win of the season.

Whing said: “The performance was very good, the first half was tense but we came out really well in the second half.

“We always looked dangerous, it was another convincing performance and I’m delighted with the result as well, all in all it was a fantastic performance.

“We’ll get the lads in, rest, recover and look ahead to another tough game, we go again, it’s been a relentless period for us but the lads have dug in and been absolutely fantastic.”

Moors went close to an opener when former Solihull loanee Louie Moulden tipped Kelly’s free-kick from the edge of the penalty area over the crossbar.

Rochdale responded later in the half as Kairo Mitchell fired over from eight-yards out before James Clarke made a last-ditch tackle to keep the scores level heading into the break.

And Moors eventually broke the deadlock on 49 minutes as Stevens found the bottom right corner from Joe Newton’s cut-back.

Moors goalkeeper Tommy Simkin made a couple of important saves to keep the home side in front denying Ian Henderson with a diving save and then Ryan East from point-blank range.

And Whing’s men wrapped up the win on 72 minutes when Kelly pounced on a loose ball before chipping Moulden from close range to score his seventh goal of the season.

Solihull are next in action at home to Aldershot Town on Saturday, October 7 with kick-off at 3pm at the ARMCO Arena.
