SOLIHULL Moors suffered a penalty shootout defeat against lower-division AFC Fylde to exit the FA Trophy at the third round stage.

Moors came from two goals down to take the tie to penalties after a Danny Ormerod brace put National League North side Fylde in command at Damson Park.

However, goals from Darius Lipsiuc and Bradley Stevenson took the game to a shootout as all 11 players on each side took a penalty.

Moors goalkeeper Laurie Walker saw his effort saved by Fylde stopper Pat Boyes, after the latter had earlier scored from the spot, as the shootout finished 9-8 in the away side’s favour.

National League North leaders Fylde broke the deadlock two minutes before half time when Ormerod glanced a header past Walker following a corner.

And Ormerod grabbed his second of the game on 56 minutes as he finished into an empty net after causing confusion in the Solihull defence.

However, Moors halved the deficit on 67 minutes when substitute Lipsiuc fired a shot from outside the penalty area into the left corner of the net.

And Solihull equalised on 78 minutes as Stevenson finished from close range after Jacob Wakeling’s initial effort rattled the crossbar.

The game went to penalties and Moors looked set to advance to round four after Luke Hunter missed the target for Fylde.

However, when presented with a chance to win the game for Moors, Tyrese Sinclair saw his spot kick saved by Boyes in the Fylde net.

Both teams scored their next two penalties before Max Taylor’s spot kick hit the top of the crossbar which gave Moors another chance to win the tie.

However, Boyes produced heroics again to keep out James Clarke’s effort and later scored from the spot himself to put Fylde on the brink of victory.

And Boyes denied his opposite number Walker from the spot as Chris Millington suffered a first home defeat as Moors boss.

Solihull are next in action against Sutton United on Sunday, December 21 with kick-off at 12pm at Damson Park.
