FOOTBALL - Robins through to semi-finals after Somers victory

NATHAN Corry’s second-half goal helped Knowle secure a 2-1 win away at AFC Somers as the Robins advanced to the semi-finals of the Birmingham FA Saturday Vase.

Corry’s winner came minutes after Somers had levelled the game early in the second half after George Seeley’s sumptuous lob opened the scoring at Warley Rugby Club.

Knowle made a strong start as Seeley and Charlie Morris both tested the Somers goalkeeper in the opening few minutes.

However, the home side responded and shot narrowly wide as Somers looked to capitalise on Craig Johnson’s misplaced clearance.

The visitors turned the screw as the half wore on with Corry’s lob bouncing inches over the crossbar and Jack Mullen’s shot from 25-yards out tipped over.

And Mullen then headed wide before he picked up the ball in his own half, beat two defenders and slipped in Seeley who produced an exquisite lob over the goalkeeper and into the net on 28 minutes.

However, Mullen then spurned a golden chance to double Knowle’s lead after he was denied by the keeper when one-on-one before Somers headed narrowly wide at the other end.

And Somers drew level on 52 minutes when the ball was bundled home at the back post from a dangerous set piece delivery.

The Robins restored their lead just three minutes later as Corry headed in from close range following some head tennis at a corner.

And Knowle were forced to deal with two late corners to come away with their seventh straight win and advance to the last four.

Knowle are next in action away at Coventry Alvis on Saturday, February 18 with kick-off at 3pm at Alvis Sports and Social Club.
