FOOTBALL - Robins grab late winner against Fairfield

JACK Mullins scored a late winner to help Knowle claim a narrow 2-1 win against Fairfield Villa and maintain their unbeaten start to the season.

Mullins scored the decisive goal late in the day after Dylon Bennett’s penalty had put the Robins ahead at the Draintech Community Ground.

Knowle sit fourth in the Midland Football League Division Two table and are unbeaten after six matches.

The two teams cancelled each other out for much of the first period until Bennett smashed home from the penalty spot in first half injury time to hand Knowle the lead.

And the second half followed a similar pattern before Connor Doyle levelled for Fairfield with a venomous effort from 25-yards out to leave Robins goalkeeper Craig Johnson with no chance.

Both teams had a goal ruled out for offside whilst Fairfield keeper Callum Martin needed lengthy treatment and carried on between the sticks despite looking the worse for wear.

And Knowle’s winner came courtesy of a Martin fumble with Mullins on hand to tap home and secure the points following some pinball in the Villa six-yard box.

The visitors had Kieran Fitzgerald sent off late on and ended the game with nine-men after Doyle was sent to the sin bin deep into injury time.

Knowle are next in action away at Boldmere Sports and Social Falcons on Saturday, September 10 with kick-off at 3pm at Boldmere Sports and Social Club.
