FOOTBALL - Moors Women power past Peterborough

Solihull Editorial 8th Mar, 2023   0

BECKY Knight scored twice as Solihull Moors Women ripped up the form book to beat Peterborough United 4-0 and end their five-game winless run despite playing without a recognised goalkeeper.

Defender Abby Jackson recorded a clean sheet with the gloves as Knight struck twice with further goals from Zoe Creaney and Tiana Russell-Cartwright at Davisons Law Arena.

The result means Moors sit fourth in the FA Women’s National League Division One table having ended Peterborough’s impressive seven-game winning run in all competitions.

And Moors made the perfect start to open the scoring on four minutes when the ball fell kindly to Knight on the edge of the penalty area and she arrowed a shot into the bottom left corner.

Solihull almost added a second goal when Creaney’s header from Hannah Snape’s corner hit the crossbar.

The home side doubled their lead on 19 minutes when Creaney met another perfect Snape corner and powered the ball home.

Posh came close to reducing the deficit when Keir Perkins looked to capitalise on a defensive mix-up only to shoot inches wide of the post.

And Moors eventually sealed the win on 82 minutes when Russell-Cartwright tapped home into an empty net after Creaney’s free-kick was parried into the scorer’s path.

There was still time for Moors to add some gloss to the scoreline as Knight grabbed her second of the afternoon in injury time with a clinical finish into the bottom corner following some neat build-up play.

Moors are next in action at home to Leafield Athletic on Thursday, March 16 with kick-off at 7.45pm at Davisons Law Arena.
