FOOTBALL - Moors edged out by title-chasing Notts County

SOLIHULL Moors were made to pay the penalty after conceding two spot kicks in a 2-1 home defeat against title-chasing Notts County.

Callum Maycock’s goal fired Moors into the lead only for two Ruben Rodrigues penalties to turn the game in the league leaders’ favour at the ARMCO Arena.

The result means Moors sit 12th in the National League table, three points outside of the play-off places.

Neal Ardley’s side made a strong start and were rewarded with the opening goal on 23 minutes as Maycock won the ball high up the pitch and exchanged passes with Andrew Dallas before side-footing home into the bottom right corner.

However, the visitors drew level on 37 minutes when Rodrigues found the bottom right corner from the spot, as he sent Ryan Boot the wrong way, after James Clarke fouled Cedwyn Scott in the box.

Solihull spurned a glorious chance to reclaim the lead before the break when debutant David Davis played a ball over the top to Dallas only for the striker to shoot well wide when one-on-one with County goalkeeper Sam Slocombe.

The Magpies were next to be wasteful in front of goal when the National League’s top scorer, Macaulay Langstaff, was played in only to shoot inches wide of the left-hand post.

And the visitors went even closer soon after as Justin Donawa cleared Kyle Cameron’s deflected goalbound shot off the line.

However, the league leaders eventually completed the turnaround on 80 minutes when Rodrigues blasted his second penalty of the night high into the goal after Ryan Barnett was penalised for a soft foul on Matt Palmer from a short corner.

Moors are next in action at home to Gateshead on Saturday, February 4 with kick-off at 3pm at the ARMCO Arena.
