FOOTBALL - Knowle beat Coton Green to keep pace with leaders

BRANDON Hague and Tom Cullen were on target as Knowle secured a classy 2-0 win against 10-man Coton Green to remain second in the Midland Football League Division Two table.

Hague struck in the opening minute before Cullen tapped home a second goal later in the half to make sure of the points at New Mill Lane.

Coton Green had Corey Powell sent off in the second period to compound the hosts misery on a fine afternoon for the Robins.

The win means Knowle remain one point behind leaders Cadbury Athletic and stretch their unbeaten run in the league to nine matches.

Knowle could not have dreamed of a better start when Hague was left unmarked in the box to turn home a delightful cross from the right inside the opening 60 seconds.

Coton Green dominated possession but struggled to break down a stubborn Knowle defence before Cullen doubled the visitor’s advantage.

Another cross from the right caused problems for the Coton Green defence with the ball eventually breaking to Cullen who tapped home into an empty net on 37 minutes.

The home side almost reduced the deficit only for Knowle to clear an effort from a corner on their own goal line to head into the break with their two-goal lead intact.

Knowle withstood Coton Green’s early pressure in the second-half before the home side had Powell sent off after he received a second yellow card.

The Robins comfortably closed out the game to secure an important win against one of their title rivals.

Knowle are next in action away at third place Fairfield Villa on Saturday, November 13 with kick-off at 2pm.
