FOOTBALL - Knowle miss out on league title after Northfield Town win game in-hand

KNOWLE have missed out on promotion and the league title after closest rivals Northfield Town won the first of two games in-hand.

The Robins suffered a 1-0 defeat against Northfield at Shenley Lane in their final league game of the season earlier this month.

Knowle knew a win in that fixture would have secured the Midland Football League Division Two title and promotion.

However, defeat meant Northfield required just two points from their final two fixtures to pip Knowle to the title.

And Northfield won 2-0 away at Coventry Alvis to secure the title and deny the Robins promotion in the process.

Northfield drew 1-1 with Hampton in their final league fixture of the campaign to finish three points above Knowle in the table.

Knowle scored a league high 88 goals and conceded just 11 goals all season.

The Robins lost just two of their 30 league games all campaign with title-winners Northfield losing only once.

Knowle looked favourites to clinch the title before they suffered a shock home defeat against Littleton in early February.

The Robins also slipped to successive draws away at Coventrians and Central Ajax in early March with the dropped points proving costly to their title hopes.
