FOOTBALL - Knowle battle to Cadbury win after cup success

TOM Craine scored the only goal as Knowle battled to a hard-fought 1-0 win against Cadbury Athletic after beating Leamington Hibernian 2-0 in the Les James Challenge Cup.

Craine’s first-half winner against Cadbury settled a close game at the Draintech Community Ground after his penalty opened the scoring against Leamington Hibernian with Mike Palmer also on target.

The victory leaves Knowle fifth in the Midland Football League Division Two table much to the delight of Robins’ joint boss Clive Seeley.

Seeley said: “I was pleased with the togetherness of the team, I said I don’t care how you play it’s about the result and fair play they put their bodies on the line.

“We were a little bit nervous at the end, we had six regulars out and to be fair to Cadbury they had several out as well.

“We were the better side in the first half and missed some chances from set plays in the second half, that would have made it a bit more comfortable.

“We had to weather the storm in the last 15 minutes when they were quite direct, fair play to the defence and the keeper for holding on.”

Knowle are next in action against Solihull rivals Hampton on Saturday, September 2 with kick-off at 3pm at the Draintech Community Ground.
