EARLSWOOD Town suffered a 2-0 defeat away at Coventrians as John Palmer scored an unfortunate freak own goal.

Palmer’s seemingly harmless backpass bobbled over the boot of Earls goalkeeper Alfie Pyott after Lewis Barrett opened the scoring for the home side at Bennetts Road.

The result means Earlswood sit 12th in the Midland Football League Division Two table and still require three more points to secure their place in the division next season.

Coventrians broke the deadlock on the quarter-hour mark when Barrett volleyed home a corner despite the best efforts of Callum Tranter on the line.

And despite the Earls showing signs of improvement after the break, a calamitous own goal put an end to the visitors hopes of staging a comeback.

Palmer’s attempted backpass bobbled along the uneven surface and over the boot of Pyott before trickling into the back of the net.

Earlswood travel to Birmingham United on Saturday, March 22 with kick-off at 3pm at the Valley Stadium.
