CRICKET - Westwood not looking at league table after Warwickshire complete first block of County Championship fixtures

IAN Westwood admits it is too early to start looking at the league table after Warwickshire CCC completed the first block of County Championship fixtures.

Rain forced the Bears to settle for a rain-affected draw against local rivals Worcestershire at New Road

And the result means Warwickshire end the first block of seven Division One matches in fourth place – 22 points behind early leaders Nottinghamshire.

Warwickshire needed just two more wickets to beat the Pears only for the heavens to open and deny the visitors a chance of victory.

And Westwood insists he and his players are taking the season one game at a time.

Westwood said: “It was a good game of cricket, it was a shame it couldn’t reach a conclusion on a tough pitch for batting it was very competitive.

“If someone bowled well for a spell you could lose five or six wickets for no runs, it was that sort of pitch.

“We’re trying to grow our squad, we’re happy with the way we’re playing and when the next block [of fixtures] comes around we’ll continue to do what we have done this year.

“It’s way too early to be looking at the table, our philosophy this year is we’re taking it one game at a time.”

Warwickshire posted 227 in their first innings before bowling Worcestershire out for 181.

The Bears then scored 280 in their second innings to set the Pears a total of 327 for victory.

And Warwickshire had the home side in trouble on 181-8 only for rain to wash out the final 47 overs of play.

The county will now turn their attention to the T20 Blast.

Birmingham Bears travel to Notts Outlaws on Friday, May 30 with the game to start at 6.30pm at Trent Bridge.
