CRICKET - Warwickshire held by Hampshire in stalemate

MARK Robinson wants Warwickshire to continue to play attacking cricket and entertain after the county dominated proceedings in a draw with Hampshire.

The Bears posted 455 in their first innings before bowling Hampshire out for 365 and reached 205-4 in their second innings at the Utilita Bowl as the County Championship fixture ended in a stalemate.

Warwickshire have now drawn all three of their County Championship matches this season but head coach Robinson insists the Bears will continue to attack games in search of a first win of the campaign.

Robinson said: “I think everybody had written the final day off but the boys came in really determined to try and set a match up and all the boys played selflessly to try and get to a target.

“Sometimes it will bite you on the backside and you might give away a game you had pretty safe but we want to play attacking cricket and try and entertain.

“The best way of doing that is playing on the front foot and it suits the nature of a lot of these players, we’ve dominated and driven this game.

“The only downside is we dropped a few catches on the first afternoon we bowled, we might have been in a different position if we made those catchable catches, we’ll take a lot of positives and keep going.”

The Bears top order set the foundations for another big first innings total as openers Alex Davies (149) and Rob Yates (69), supported by Will Rhodes (81), all impressed with the bat.

However, in reply, both Fletcha Middleton (116) and Nick Gubbins (119) scored centuries while Ben Brown (49) provided some late resistance as Yates (4-37) and Danny Briggs (3-73) took the bulk of the wickets.

Warwickshire went into their second innings with a 90-run lead but despite the best efforts of Yates (84 not out) and Davies (40), the Bears had to settle for another draw.

Warwickshire are next in action at home to Nottinghamshire from Friday, April 26 to 29 at Edgbaston.
