THE FIRST day of the Solihull Municipal Bowls Club Championship Finals was held in lovely weather in front of a capacity crowd on their Brick Kiln Lane green.

The opening Bonanza Triples was won 41-31 by John Cook, Norman Stephens and John Hanmore against Bob Saunders, Paul Adams and Andy Botley.

The Novice Triples also produced a close game, with Mike Cooper, Steve Waters and Roy Stiles just beating Roy Sheridan, Stephen Skellett and Brian Nock by 12 shots to ten.

The standard of bowling in the Club Pairs Trophy was exceptionally high as secretary and treasurer John Bentien skipped Roger Smith against Gary Langford and Rob Wilson.

The supporters were on the edge of their seats as every end was closely contested with Gary and Rob finishing strongly to win the cup.

The Finals Trophy pitted Pat Sheridan, Bill Preston and ‘Bishop’ David Carr against June Cooper, Arthur Windmill and Denis Aitchison, with Denis skipping his triple to a nine-shot win.

John Cooke and John Hanmore took a second victory in a closely contested Aussie Pairs, by 17 shots to 14 over Janet Tricklebank and Syd Yeomans, and Rob Wilson just got home to beat Andy Botley in the Men’s 2 Woods Plate.

Mo Yeomans took the Ladies 2 Woods title and Keith Miller the Men’s 2 Woods. Margaret Richards took the Ladies 2 Woods Plate, Pat Sheridan the Ladies 4 Woods Plate and June Cooper the Ladies Singles Handicap.

John Hanmore won his third title in the Men’s Handicap Singles, beating Norman Stephens 21-18, and John Herbert just edged out Andy Botley to win the Men’s 4 Woods Plate.
