ICE HOCKEY: BARONS opened up their Moralee campaign with an entertaining 5-4 loss against northern rivals Sheffield Steeldogs.

It took the Steeldogs just a minute to open the scoring when James Spurr’s shot found a way past Barons netminder Danny Brittle.

Barons were level just five minutes later though as Ed Eaton passed the puck to a charging Elliot Farell who registered Barons’ first goal of the new season.

A one-goal deficit was turned into a lead midway through the opening period when Matt Maurice fed Josh Bruce who calmly converted Barons’ second market of the night.

Their lead only lasted a couple of minutes though as Adrian Palak scored for the Steeldogs during a powerplay.

The high-tempo pace continued in the second period as Sheffield re-took the lead through Palak before Barons’ Niklas Ottosson levelled the game once more.

Ashley Calvert restored Steeldogs’ one-goal lead before Tim Smith made the most of the visiting side’s five on three powerplay to earn Sheffield a two-goal lead.

Determined not to let the game slip away though, Luke Brittle scored his first marker of the night with five minutes of the game to go.

Despite some frantic play, Barons failed to find an equalising goal as the clock ticked down.

The Barons are next in action on Saturday night against Hull before facing Dragons on Sunday for a pair of away games.
