SOLIHULL runner Madeleine Whapples claimed victory for England’s Midland team in the 100m sprint at the under-20 Welsh International at Swansea Athletics Stadium.

Whapples ran a superb sub-12 second time for the first time to set a new personal best, crossing the line in 11.95 seconds.

That saw her finish well clear of fellow England athlete Acacia Williams-Hewitt who was second in 12.36 secs and Wales’s Kya Placide who finished third in 12.49 secs.

Whapples said: “Putting on the England vest definitely made me run faster, I’m really pleased to end my season on such a high.”

The 19-year-old runs for her local team Solihull and Small Heath Athletic Club and was making her England debut at the event.

Whapples is currently studying Sport, PE and Coaching Science at the University of Birmingham.
