Spreading the love - Shirley Parish churches get baking for Easter

MEMBERS of the churches which make up Shirley Parish have been busy baking in the run up to Easter.

And the results of all their hard work have been appreciated by the residents and staff of some of the local care homes.

“It’s all about love,” says the Reverend Paul Day, Vicar of Shirley Parish, as he set off with another delivery.

“Love for God, and love for our local community.

“We wanted to do something which demonstrates that love – and who doesn’t like a slice of cake with their cuppa?”

Hundreds of slices of cake were baked, packed and delivered on the Thursday before Easter, a day which Christians particularly associate with serving others.

“It was a team effort,” said Paul.

“One of the organisers even persuaded both her husband and her son to bake their first ever cakes as part of the project.”

The project wasn’t without its challenges though.

The team contacted the care homes first, to make sure they would be complying with all their precautions, and then carefully arranged collections and deliveries to make sure everything was Covid safe.

“I’d like to thank everyone who took part,” says Paul.

“It’s been a great project – and we’re already thinking about what we can do next year.”
