Following the announcement in January 2024 that Brigid Simmonds would be stepping down as the CEO of the UK’s Betting and Gaming Council, a replacement has now been found.

Since Simmonds’ departure, Michael Dugher has taken temporary charge, but it’s since been confirmed that Grainne Hurst will take on the CEO role on a permanent basis.

Vital Role

The CEO of the Betting and Gaming Council takes charge of all operations within the industry. Revenue figures remain strong in this sector, and the outlook is positive, but there are challenges ahead. Grainne Hurst will oversee all UK casino sites, along with sports betting and other operators, as the industry looks ahead. While there are new opportunities for casinos to consider, with artificial intelligence, virtual reality and augmented reality becoming more widespread, issues such as compliance, diversity and advertising remain.

It’s a vital role within the industry, and while Michael Dugher has worked exceptionally hard in the last few months, operators will be happy to see the announcement of a permanent appointment.

Early Tasks

Hurst released her first statement as the new CEO, and she focused on the UK Government’s white paper on gambling reform. She stressed the importance of this document and confirmed her commitment to seeing it through.

The CEO went on to discuss the importance of increasing diversity within the industry. Moving forward, the aim was to work to achieve consistent stability and growth for everyone involved in the sector. It was a positive look ahead, while also stressing the challenges that the betting and gaming industry faces in the UK moving forward.

Industry Background

Grainne Hurst takes on her new role after working for ten years with the Entain Group. Part of her role involved maintaining strong government relations with the industry, so she is well placed to implement the reforms noted in the new white paper.

Hurst also helped to oversee the switch that saw GVC change its entity. As the Entain Group, the organisation now runs some of the most recognisable brands in the industry, some of which have been part of the scene for decades. It’s an excellent grounding and one that made Grainne Hurst the perfect candidate in the eyes of the hiring board.

Warm Welcome

Outgoing CEO Michael Dugher welcomed Grainne Hurst to the permanent role in a statement. He touched on her many ‘years of experience’ and her exceptional knowledge within the industry.

Dugher went on to say that she would refresh and reset the sector. Michael Dugher moves on to take up a new role as the Chair of the UK Betting and Gaming Council, and he will therefore work closely with her moving forward.

In response, Grainne Hurst confirmed that she was ‘delighted’ to take up the new role. She went on to speak about protecting customers and their interests within a well regulated industry.

Diversity Aims

In that opening statement, Grainne Hurst confirmed her commitment to introducing more diversity into British betting and gaming, and she is well placed to do that. She has been involved as a board member of Global Gaming Women, a charity that works to support the role of women in the sector.

Those aims form part of a critical workload for the new CEO over the next few years.

Crucial Period

All parties involved in the new appointment acknowledge that this is a crucial period for the betting and gaming industry. Within the UK, there are over 110,000 employees and one of the key issues will be for the council to safeguard those jobs.

Previous government regulations have seen a number of high street betting shops close down, and jobs have gone with them. As the current UK Labour government looks for tighter rules, those shops and other physical establishments will be under pressure once again. It will be up to the Betting and Gaming Council to help protect those employees.

The council will also work on behalf of the millions of UK customers that use physical and online platforms. It’s all about striking a balance and implementing rules, while working on behalf of workers and players. There are interesting times ahead and it will be fascinating to see how new CEO Grainne Hurst completes her resolutions.
