Borough teenager given gift of freedom with specialist wheelchair

A BRAVE borough teenager has been granted the gift of freedom in the form of a specialist electric wheelchair from a national children’s charity.

Joshua O’Coy has the degenerative condition Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, which leaves him dependent on his family for mobility.

The new wheelchair will allow him to manoeuvre himself around, helping with circulation and the ability to interact with other children on the same level.

Solihull Fire Station hosted the wheelchair presentation where members of the West Midlands Fire Service gave Joshua a tour of the station before presenting him with the chair.

Firefighters also presented the Boparan Trust, a UK based children’s charity which helps those with disabilities, life-limiting conditions or who are in extreme poverty, with a cheque for £10,000 from their latest fundraiser.

Warren Davies, fire service station commander, said: “We are delighted to be working with the trust for another year and it was so heart-warming to meet Joshua and see how the money is spent.”

Baljinder Boparan, trustee for the charity said: “It was a fantastic day for the presentation and I’d like to thank Warren and his team for their amazing work in supporting the trust and inspirational children like Joshua.”
