Solihull charity celebrates 20 years of rehoming retired racing Greyhounds

A SOLIHULL charity is celebrating 20 years of caring for and homing former racing dogs.

Daybreaks Trust receives Greyhounds that have finished their racing careers at the stadiums and finds them loving homes.

Acting kennels manager Kate Smiles said: “Reaching 20 years is a significant milestone for Daybreaks Trust. Over the last 2 decades, we’ve managed to home about 3500.

“At the heart of Daybreaks Trust, we have a strong sense of community.

“We still have supporters who homed dogs from Daybreaks Trust 20 years ago who are still grateful for us matching them with their beloved companions.

“We even have supporters in Wales and Scotland who have adopted dogs from us. Additionally, we are proud to provide volunteering opportunities for people from a wide range of backgrounds and abilities.”

Founded in 2006 by Ruth Price, Ruth had been tasked with rehoming Greyhounds from the former Perry Barr dog racing stadium, who had finished their racing careers.

Daybreaks Trust was named after Ruth’s treasured companion Tara, racing name ‘Daybreaks Beauty’.

Daybreaks Trust decided to become an independent charity in 2020 and separated from the Greyhound Trust.

There have been many notable achievements over the years.

Daybreaks Trust managed to home Dazzle in June 2026 after over two years and three months in kennels.

Dazzle needed a particularly suitable home environment, which meant finding the right match took longer.

Also, Caeser arrived at Daybreaks Kennels in March 2021.

Caesar, a ‘miracle dog’, was diagnosed with a mast-cell tumour and given just six to nine months to live.

A loving forever-foster home was found for him, and now he’s still having fun with his family and Greyhound brother Barney.

To mark its 20th anniversary, the charity will be holding a big birthday bash and summer fayre on Saturday July 4 at Daybreaks Kennels, 10 Coventry Road, Elmdon, B26 3QS.

It promises to be a fun-filled day including a fun dog show, over 25 stalls, face painting and lots of refreshments.

Daybreaks Trust is inviting everyone to come join in the fun, with or without their doggy companions.

All Sighthounds and big dogs are welcome. Free parking is at Birmingham Exiles Rugby Club, away from the Clubhouse, B92 9ED.
