A PUPIL at a school in Castle Vale has been awarded a Young Active Citizen Award for choosing to donate around 30 Christmas presents to a children’s home in the community.
Amelia Walsh, aged nine, who attends Pegasus Primary School said she wanted to donate the presents because she wanted the children to experience happiness and excitement on Christmas Day.
The Young Active Citizen Awards celebrate young people across the West Midlands who have made an exceptional positive impact on their communities, through leadership, service and resilience.
Lord-Lieutenant Derrick Anderson presented the award to Amelia at a ceremony.
He said: “Amelia has demonstrated an exceptional sense of empathy and social responsibility and is a shining example of how young people can make a difference through thoughtful and selfless actions.”
Adam Ames, Principal at Pegasus Primary School said: “As a school, we are incredibly proud of Amelia. She is a shining example of how young people can make a real difference through thoughtful and selfless actions.
“Her empathy, generosity and willingness to act for the benefit of others perfectly reflect the values celebrated by the Young Active Citizen Award.”
“We promote caring and kindness at Pegasus, and it is truly remarkable that Amelia has shown this level of emotional awareness and selflessness at such a young age.
“Through this act, Amelia used her own possessions and money to strengthen her local community, ensuring that vulnerable children were not forgotten during a significant cultural celebration.
“Her actions directly resulted in a measurable and meaningful impact, as children in the care setting were able to open gifts on Christmas morning who may otherwise have gone without.”
