SOLIHULL MOORS frontman close to the top of the goalscorer rankings as The Moors push for the play-offs
The 30-year-old previously played in League Two for the Saddlers between 2021 and 2023
Former Bolton Wanderers, Walsall and Motherwell forward Conor Wilkinson is making a splash in the National League for Solihull Moors. EFL fans previously enjoyed watching Wilkinson play for Bolton in the Championship for free between 2013 and 2017 but the striker is now impressing at Damson Park.
His 12 league goals, only matched at the club by Jack Stevens who has notched the same number, leave him just four goals shy of the current record.
As The Moors head into the business end of the season, Wilkinson will be keen to continue his fine form and catch up to current top scorer Regan Linney of Altrincham, who has 16 so far.
Personal goals aside, Wilkinson will also be hoping to play in League Two again next season after helping to lead Solihull to 9th place going into the next round of fixtures, just three points behind Altrincham.
However, Wilkinson and his teammates will have to bounce back from a difficult spell which has seen them go winless in five.
The Moors’ poor run of form has coincided with a dry spell for Conor himself, with the Croydon native having not scored since his New Year’s Eve double in a 2-0 home win over Tamworth, Solihull’s last win.
They have scored just one goal during that time when Alex Whitmore equalised in a 1-1 draw with Wealdstone. Fans will be hoping that The Moors and Wilkinson can both find their form again and get back on track in the hunt for a famous promotion to the Football League.
When Wilkinson joined the club in August of last year, then head coach Andy Whing described the former Republic of Ireland youth international as a “top quality player”.
Local lad Whing led the club to a playoff final against Bromley at the end of last season, which they lost to Bromley. Despite his young age and relative inexperience as a manager, Whing was picked up by League Two side Barrow a few weeks ago.
His replacement Matty Taylor previously worked with Conor Wilkinson at Walsall, helping bring the best out of the frontman.
Taylor’s reign has not gone smoothly so far, with two losses, a draw and no goals for Wilkinson or Stevens, but fans will be hopeful that he can bring the best out of the striker once again and use his talent to propel Solihull back up into the playoff places.
