TENNIS: WHILE the Murray brothers prepare for an important Davis Cup tie away in France at the beginning of next month, their mother Judy was in Solihull to pass her coaching expertise, passion and knowledge on to the young stars of tomorrow.

Judy, the mother of Wimbledon winner Andy and former World Number One doubles star Jamie, visited the David Lloyd Club in Cranmore as part of her new role as a coach consultant to the UK’s leading health and fitness operator.

She hosted a one-hour junior coaching masterclass for the club’s junior members with the aim of increase participation in the sport.

Speaking about her visit, Judy, who is a former Scotland international with 64 titles to her name, said: “My aim is to get children engaged and active through sport and enjoying tennis in particular.

“The same motor skills underpin every sport and these can be developed in a fun and natural way through family play.

“A child’s first port of call when they want to try any activity, is the parent so the more we can engage the whole family, the better.

“Sport has so many wide-ranging benefits in terms of life skills so I’m looking forward to sharing my knowledge and passion with the whole family.”

Inspired by Andy Murray and British Tennis’ recent Davis Cup success in November 2015, David Lloyd Clubs reported a 12 per cent increase in the numbers of children aged 5 to 13 years signing up as racquets members.

Tom Sutheran, Junior Tennis Professional at David Lloyd Solihull, Cranmore added: “It is great to see how Judy simplifies coaching for all levels, whilst managing to keep the session’s fun and engaging.

“I’m excited to see Judy build the coach workforce and improve the level of coaching across our David Lloyd Clubs, as a result of our three-year agreement with Judy.”
