WEIGHTLIFTING: SOME of the country’s strongest lifters competed at the Central Fitness Gym in Sheldon on Sunday at an event which saw a record number of competitors qualify for the Global Powerlifting Committee (GPC) 2017 World Championship Finals.

On a day where several British records were smashed, a total of 19 lifters earned a place in the GB team for the European Finals in Poland in June, and the World Championships in the Czech Republic in September.

A further 12 athletes hit the qualifying total for the British Finals and will appear on the platform in Manchester later in the year.

The event was promoted and run by Central Fitness owner Lee Marshall, a multi-time European and World Powerlifting Champion and world record holder.

“On behalf of the GPC I’d like to say a huge thank you to Lee Marshall and his team at Central Fitness for putting on another awesome event,” said Andy Saunders, president of the GPC GB.

“We saw some excellent lifting and a large number of qualifiers for the British, European & World Championships so a massive congratulations to all those lifters.”

Many of the competitors will be back training this week for the Ink and Iron Tattoo Convention at the New Bingley Hall in Hockley on April 9.

Featuring a ‘GPC Push and Pull’ event, which consists of two lifts – bench press and deadlift – the unique convention is expected to attract lifters, exhibitors and tattoo artists from across the world and is an event not to be missed.
