Warwickshire Bears maintain promotion push with narrow win in London

WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL: WARWICKSHIRE Bears boss Tom Masterson admits his side need to make improvements if they are to win promotion from the National League First Division South after scraping past a determined London Thunders side.

The Bears eventually came out on top 55-50 in the capital against one of the established sides in the division and the victory leaves Masterson’s side top on 13 points from eight matches.

From the tip off the game was a tough physical battle with both teams scoring basket for basket, and neither side were able to take control of the game.

With leading scorer Jacob Robison shooting consistently, London Thunder used their overwhelming experience to keep within reach by taking numerous offensive rebounds and they were able to keep within touching distance of the Bears.

By the mid-way point there was only three points in it at 25-28 to the visitors and the second period followed in the same pattern.

Both teams were scoring freely which set up a nail-biting finale with the Bears constantly changing their line-up to find a successful combination.

With just two minutes left, the Bears went into a lead of five which they were able to keep at the final whistle to the relief of head coach Masterson.

“That was too close for comfort, but a wins a win and hopefully that takes us one step closer to our goal of securing our place in our first season in Division One

“We need to learn from these games that we can’t allow other teams to get so many offensive rebounds and we need to control our own backboards.”

The Bears are next in action when they host Cardiff Met Archers on January 29, while this Saturday the second team travel to Plymouth Storm in a top-of-the-table clash.

The Bears are still looking for a sponsor for the team and are also on the lookout for new players. Anyone interested should email [email protected] or call 07946518354.
