WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL: AN EIGHTH consecutive victory for Warwickshire Bears’ second team away at rivals Plymouth Storm keeps them top of the Third Division South & West.

Tom Masterson’s side knew they were in for a tough battle in Plymouth on Sunday, but they did enough to come away with a 49-26 win to move four points clear at the top.

From the tip off the Storm played a physical game as they tried to intimidate the Bears out of their game but this did not deter the Bears who were always in control of their play.

The visitors started to make in roads to the Storm basket while having the upper hand in defence and limiting their opponents to few shots at their own basket. At the end of the first quarter the Bears held a 10-4 lead and in the second Plymouth looks to narrow the gap as they pressed hard to force turnovers, but the visitors managed to pull further away and led 23-12 at the half-way stage.

Storm came out for the third quarter knowing that they needed to try and pull back some of the score quickly and stop the Bears ascendancy at their basket.

Instead the Bears’ defence remained on top as they limited their opponents to few chances while adding to the score themselves.

By the end of the third quarter the Bears were 17 points in front and with the game virtually won, coach Masterson gave several squad players a runout as the Bears pulled further away to claim a comfortable 49-26 win.

Coach Masterson said: “So proud of the team today, to come to our nearest rivals and finish the game with that score is a reflection of how well they played and have improved since the last time we met.”

The Bears are next in action when the club’s women’s team take on Nottingham in the National Women’s League.
