Traditional flag raising ceremony signals the start of a new bowls season

SOLIHULL BOWLING Club has raised the flag on a new year of bowls at the traditional ceremony to formally open the competitive summer season.

Club president Norman Howlings hoisted the flag in front of dozens of members before a special club competition between 25 members to mark the occasion was played.

Open to men and women, Solihull Bowling Club has a comprehensive programme of events taking place until mid-October – with mid-week competitive league bowling, social bowling and internal club competitions providing the highlights.

The green will remain open over the next six months for members – subject to suitable weather and ground conditions.

Based at the Ramada Hotel, the club is set in tranquil conditions and close to the town centre.

Dating back to the 1400s, and possibly earlier, the bowling green itself is one of the oldest in the country.

An open day will take place on Sunday (April 17) between 2pm and 4.30pm where the club is welcoming new members of all ages to come along and try out a new sport.

Full adult membership for the 2016 season is £70.
